In 2012, women took to the streets across India to protest the rape, beating, and subsequent death of Jyoti Singh Pandey—a shocking act of gender-based violence that came to be known as the Nirbhaya rape case. It was in this pivotal moment of resistance that the Fearless Collective was born, an unprecedented network of young activists joining forces to use public art and storytelling to reclaim space—and safety—for girls, women, and non-binary people. The Collective works with grassroots organizers to co-create murals and facilitate workshops, foster community dialogue, and develop multimedia content and platforms to build the power of feminist movements. At the Collective’s core is a commitment to centre the women at the margins whose voices and safety are so often ignored, including queer Muslims, Indigenous women, and migrant and displaced communities.
