Gifts of Securities (Canada and the United States)
Donating publicly traded securities (such as stocks or mutual funds) is a tax-efficient way to give.
When you donate securities directly:
- You receive a charitable tax receipt for the full fair market value
- You may avoid capital gains tax that would apply if you sold the securities first
- Gifts of securities can be made during your lifetime or through your estate.
Leave a Gift in Your Will (Canada)
Leaving a gift in your will is deeply meaningful and can also offer important benefits:
- Your income and financial security today are not affected, and you can ensure your loved ones are cared for first
- You can choose to leave a specific amount or a percentage of your estate, no matter the size
- Your estate may receive significant tax benefits
- You gain peace of mind knowing your legacy reflects your values and commitment to justice
A gift in your will can be your legacy - carrying your values forward and helping feminist movements create change that reaches far beyond our own time.
Life Insurance (Canada)
A gift of life insurance can be an affordable way to make a meaningful future contribution.
Possible options include:
- Naming the Equality Fund as a beneficiary of your policy
- Transferring ownership of an existing policy
- Taking out a new policy and naming the Equality Fund as owner or beneficiary
Because life insurance gifts can be structured in different ways and some arrangements may not be appropriate in every case, please contact us before making any changes to your policy. We’re happy to discuss what options may be suitable.
Registered Funds (Canada)
You can name the Equality Fund as a beneficiary of registered accounts such as: RRSPs, RRIFs, TFSAs
This can be a simple and tax-effective way to make a future gift.
How it works:
- Contact your financial institution or advisor
- Request a beneficiary designation form
- Name The Equality Fund as a beneficiary
Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) Canada, UK & US
A Donor Advised Fund - often held at community foundations or a charitable arm of a financial institution - is like a charitable savings account. You can recommend a grant, or recurring grants, now to make an immediate impact.
Donors in Canada can typically recommend grants to the Equality Fund directly through their DAF. Donors in the United States and the United Kingdom can also support the Equality Fund through their DAFs — we work with trusted partner organizations in those countries that are able to receive DAF grants and direct the funds to us.
Asset Giving from Outside Canada (Cross border giving)
The Equality Fund is a registered Canadian charity. If you are based in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, or elsewhere and are considering a gift through your will, retirement assets, life insurance, or securities, tax rules and giving mechanisms may differ.
We can collaborate with you, your professional advisors, and where appropriate one of our international fiscal sponsorship partners to help identify the most effective and appropriate way for your gift to be structured and received.
