FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
GRANTS AND FUNDING
A: We fund grants to organizations in ODA-eligible countries that are core, flexible and multiyear, for up to five years. This means we are not in a position to open a call every year. We have 4 funding streams: Catalyze - support to local organizations Activate – funding feminist and women’s funds Connect - resourcing movement spaces such as convenings, networks, coalitions, and alliances Prepare, Respond and Care - supporting feminist responses to crises If you are located in Africa, we work in partnership with African Women’s Development Fund, who hold all of our regional Catalyze grantmaking across the continent. We centre AWDF as the regional expert and do not direct their grantmaking decisions. We encourage you to check their website for open calls and information. We do not fund individuals.
A: Our last call for proposals was in June 2024 and our next one will likely happen in 2027. Please keep checking our website for information.
A: We recommend global funds including Global Fund for Women, Women Win, Mama Cash, Foundation for a Just Society and more. For a focus on crisis response, there is Urgent Action Fund Sisterhood, MADRE, Doria Feminist Fund, Global Resilience Fund and more. For humanitarian response, there is the First Response Fund (FRF), which is a global, pooled fund for diverse women and girl-led organizations. FRF Secretariat is hosted and administered by the Equality Fund.
A: No. Our funding goes to women’s funds, women-run organizations and feminist funds only. We choose to invest in organizations in the Global South, with leaders in their own communities.
Donating and Philanthropy
A: We do not organize our funding streams according to regions or themes. However, we do compile reports from the organizations we have funded, which means we can look back and tally how much money went to various regions and causes, for example, funding that went to the Caribbean and Latin American region or funding that went to sexual and reproductive health and rights. For more information on how we have funded, please see our Year 5 Report, All Systems Go.
A: Yes. There is no contribution that is too modest. We welcome all donors, bilateral partners and individual citizens alike. Come join the same table. We are all trying to move in the same direction and there is power in numbers.
A: The Equality Fund was launched with a one-time contribution of $300 million by the Canadian Government. That money has been invested in a 100 per cent gender-aligned portfolio according to our investment strategy. In short, this funding ensures the longevity of our funding model. Individual donors ensure cashflow so our partners can access immediate resources. This is why it works to blend investment returns with philanthropy to create long-term funding. Philanthropy is the funding strand that addresses urgent needs, flowing fast, while our investments help us sustain funds for systemic change, which takes time. This is how philanthropy and investment strategy work together for broad, sustained impact. The importance of philanthropy cannot be overstated. Donations of all sizes combine to form a lifeline for movements precisely when they need it most.

Governance

We move money to organizations in the Global South, specifically ODA recipients. (oecd.org/en/topics/sub-issues/oda-eligibility-and-conditions/dac-list-of-oda-recipients.html)
A: No. Our governing board is comprised of movement leaders and investment experts from around the world.
